Euro exchange rate - in July 2005 and depending on the trader (better in "Salvador de Bahía" than Ilhéus) varíes between 2,90 - 2,70 Brazilian "Reales".

USEFULL RECOMENDATIONS: :

  • Check with your travel agency if its included in the ticket the fee that you have to pay to get out of the country. It's 36 USD and you will have to pay (cash) in Dollars or Reales (brazilian currency). You must pay when you check on your way back. Do not forget to keep this amount or you won't be able to leave the country.

  • Most nationalities need a visa to enter Brazil (Spanish citizens do not need one). You can get one in aprox. 48h at any Brazilian embassy or consulate.

  • BE CAREFULL with pick-pocketers, husslers and petty robbers... Carry the necessary for your daily tours and never enter dark empty streets. If you encounter any trouble, better not offer any resistance, they can be armed.

  • In July gets dark aprox. at 17:30H and day light at 05:45H. Have this in account so you don't find yourself in unwanted locations when it gets dark.

  • BE AWARE with the shedules of flights and buses. Brazil has 4 different time zones (according to the region). Itacaré (Bahia) has, this time of the year (different in winter), 5 hours less than Madrid, Paris or Rome; 4 hours less than London, Lisbon or Canary Islands.

  • DO not forget mosquito repelent (with 40% of DEET)

  • For phone calls you will need a special card. Although more expensive its a lot more confortable and practical to call from local phone booths.

  • For mobile phones please contact you operator before leaving to Brazil.

DANGERS AND WARNINGS :

Brazil is very badly described by the world press when it comes to violence and crime rates. Truth must be said that there is a certain degree of danger for tourists specially in the big cities althoug it's been largely exagerated. Just applying comun sense (has you'd do anywhere else in the world) can save you from getting robbed. Avoy walking around town on the first day "Jet laged" because you will be an obvious target for pick pocketers and robbers. Carry only the necessary for the day. DO NOT offer resistance and you'll be fine.
