F.A.Q.

Things You Want To Know
As the school continues to expand we are finding more and more people e-mailing us with questions about coming to Cape Verde. Due to the large amount of time it takes to e-mail people we have created a page with most frequently asked questions.

Do any of the Calima Surf packages include airplane tickets?
None of the Calima Packages include airplane tickets.

What currency/credit card should we bring?
The best currency to bring with you is the euro. You can use euro on the island or exchange it for escudo’s at the airport or local bank. Visa is the most well used card on the island. Few places take Master Card. The cost of changing traveller’s cheques is very expensive here.

What is the average size kite used on the Sal island?
Summer: June to October: 14 to 16
Winter: November to May: 9 to 1
Average Wind Surf Sails?
Summer: June to October: 6.5-8.5
Winter: November to May: 4.7-63)

Do I need a wet suite?
In the summer months June to November the water is warm enough that no wet suite is required when surfing/windsurfing/kitesurfing.  In the winter months, we recommend a spring wetsuit.

Should I reserve course/board/rentals before tlinehand?
We recommend that you reserve a course or rental prior to arriving to guarantee you a spot as well as material.

Can I book and pay on line?
You can book for a course or rental via e-mail and pay the reserve.

Are there good wave spots there and where are they?
In the bay where we are located, there are two good waves spots (beginner to intermediate). There are also several other wave spots on the island, however you will need a car to get to them.

 What equipment do you have?
For Kite surfing we use Naish material
For Wind surfing we have ezzy sails, semi custom angulo boards and fanatics.
For Surfing: custom short boards, mini Malibu, Malibu, fun board, long board. These can be rent be the hour, day or longer.

What clothes shall we bring if we are doing lessons with you?
We provide al the gear, just bring yourself. If you are renting material with us, we encourage people to bring their own Wet Suite, Harness, and Helmet (for kite surfing), if they have it.

What do we need to bring if we are renting equipment from you?
Please bring your own Wet-suit and Helmet. We will rent you a harness if you do not have one, but it is better if you have your own. Rental is usually kite, bar and board only. At any school on the island.

What do I need to know if I am bringing my own equipment?
Bring all your own gear: wet suite, harness, helmet, leash, etc. School here DO NOT rent out helmets, wet suites, harnesses and leashes. These are for lessons only. The reason being they are difficult to find on the island and expensive to bring here.
It is also difficult to buy these things, so bring some spares for your bar and line (chicken loop etc.).

What happens if I rip my Kite or Sail?
The surf zone does both Kite and Sail repairs.

What is the average cost of a meal/drink on the island?
The average cost of a meal is between 8 to 15euro per person. A beer is 1.50 euro, and can’s of juice 1euro.

How do we get to the station for the airport and how expensive is it?
During the day the average cost of a taxi is 7 euros and at night 10euros. We are located 1min from the Santa Maria Village. This is approx 15min from the airport.

 How do we fly there?
Please look at our transportation page. There are direct flight going into Sal, Cabo Verde, please ask you local travel agent.

What is Kite Beach (Cabasa Salinas) and how do you get there?
Kite beach is the most popular spot for established surfers. It is on the east coast approximately 10-15min from Santa Maria. The wind is mostly side on shore and less gusty. There is no accommodation there and is only accessible by car. You can catch taxi's there (found anywhere in Santa Maria) and arrange for the taxi to pick you up at a later time. The total cost of the round trip is 15euro. Try to not take any valuables there, just the bare necessities (water and sun screen). There are no food places there.
